China has introduced a new visa category, the K visa, designed to attract young foreign talent entering the country. This marks a major shift in China’s regulation on the administration of foreigners’ entries and exits.
The K visa targets young professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This includes individuals with at least a Bachelor’s degree from recognized universities or research institutions, or those engaged in education or research.
Unlike other visa categories, the K visa does not require a pre-arranged invitation from a local employer or institution. It will also provide more flexibility in terms of validity period, duration of stay, and number of entries.
K visa holders can engage in various activities, including exchanges in education, culture, science and technology, and entrepreneurial and business activities.
This new visa policy is seen as a move to compete for global talent, particularly as some other countries are tightening their immigration policies for skilled professionals.
China’s government has stated that the country’s development requires the participation of talent from around the world and that this new visa will facilitate international cooperation and exchanges among young science and technology professionals.
The new regulations and visa category will take effect on October 1, 2025.
