Why check your NHIF Status

First things first: why even check your NHIF status? As an NHIF member, staying informed about your contribution status is important for ensuring uninterrupted access to healthcare. No one desires to get sick, but illnesses usually come unexpectedly and inflict significant financial burdens on individuals and families. Since we can’t predict when a medical emergency may occur, it’s crucial to be prepared with health insurance.

The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is ultimately one of the best health insurers in Kenya that enables Kenyans to enjoy affordable, and accessible healthcare. Established in 1966, the Fund offers insurance coverage in five different schemes including the National Health Scheme, Enhanced Scheme, and Linda Mama.

All Kenyans, whether employed or self-employed, can register for NHIF and check their scheme using the NHIF self-care platform. After registration, you can make your monthly contributions via the M-Pesa pay bill, the NHIF portal, and the bank account. The state parastatal eased the process of NHIF registration and payment. However, many Kenyans still inquire about the status of their NHIF contribution.

To start the process of checking your account details, visit the NHIF website (www.nhif.or.ke).

Once you’re on the website, click on the ‘Self-Care” button at the top right-hand corner.

Sign in to the Selfcare platform

Proceed to sign in to the Selfcare platform through your NHIF account or e-Citizen account. You’ll receive a one-time pin (OTP) through your phone. Enter the pin to proceed to your account.

If you don’t have an account, hit ‘Register’ and submit your ID number and birth date.

Check the Status in the profile

After signing-in,  select “Profile” to view your status. The status is indicated as either “Active” or “Inactive.” You’ll be able to check the dependant, penalties, arrears, and last contributions on the dashboard. Once you’re done,  log out to ensure the safety of your account.

How to Check NHIF Status via SMS

Mobile phones have transformed the way Kenyans transact including accessing government services. Nowadays, you can use your mobile phone to check your NHIF contribution status. Follow the following steps to check your status through SMS.

  • Go to the main menu of your phone and open the messaging application.
  • Then, create a new text message with the format: ID (space) your national ID number (e.g. ID 36374827)
  • Send the message to 1550
  • You’ll receive a reply with details about your NHIF account status.

Note that the transaction attracts a charge of Kshs 10.

Additionally, you can check your NHIF contribution status via the USSD code. Simply dial *155# using your phone and follow the prompts. It’s absolutely free to check your details via the app.

How to check NHIF status via “My NHIF’ App

My NHIF offers an official self-care platform that you, as an NHIF member, can use to manage your account. Through the app, you can check your account status, and select or change your hospitals of choice. You can check your status by following these steps;

  • Using your phone, visit Google Play Store or Apple Store
  • On the search bar, enter “My NHIF” and enter to search.
  • Install the application.
  • Once the App is installed, tap on the Icon and open it.
  • Select “Other Services”
  • Enter your National ID number and tap “Request OTP.” You’ll receive the OTP via your phone number used in NHIF registration. Key in the OTP to access your account

Click on “My Profile” to view your status.

How to Check NHIF Status via Email

Another method of checking your NHIF contribution is sending an email to customercare@nhif.or.ke. However, it may take a few hours or days for you to receive a response. You’ll receive a PDF document with information about your NHIF status.

Wrapping Up

If you’re looking for ways to inquire about your NHIF status, you can use one of the methods provided in this article. Being able to check your NHIF contribution status means you’ll avoid hectic visits to the NHIF offices. Ensure you pay your monthly payments to keep your account active and avoid penalties.
