JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is expected to visit Kenya and three other African nations in mid-October in an effort to push for the biggest U.S bank’s expansion on the continent, according to Reuters.
Apart from Kenya, Dimon is also expected to tour Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and South Africa. The planned visit will be Dimon’s first trip to the continent in seven years.
The move is part of the bank’s strategy to grow its operations and services globally. Currently, JP Morgan Chase has offices in two countries in Africa; Nigeria and South Africa.
The two offices offer various services including commercial and investment banking services and asset management. Dimon first announced the lender’s plan to enter Kenya and Ghana in 2018. However, the plans were halted by local regulators.
In 2023, Dicon announced the opening of the regional office in Nairobi. Planned to be located at the GTC Office Tower in Westlands, the new office is expected to serve as a hub for the lender’s operations in East Africa.
The development follows President William Ruto’s meeting with a senior l JP Morgan leader in 2023. Following this meeting, President Ruto stated that the bank had pledged to open a new office in the Kenyan capital.
