The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a new login feature on its iTax platform, enabling individual taxpayers to access their accounts using their National Identity (ID) numbers.
The update comes in response to widespread public outcry over system access issues, especially during tax return deadlines.
In the past, accessing iTax was only possible with a Personal Identification Number (PIN). However, many taxpayers raised concerns with the authority about forgetting or losing their PINs,
The new ID-based login system is expected to offer a more convenient option for many taxpayers during peak filing seasons. However, the PIN-based login method will remain available.
KRA stated that this update is part of a broader effort to modernize tax administration and improve user experience, encouraging greater tax compliance.
“By offering an option that aligns with users’ preferences and habits, KRA hopes to reduce friction in accessing services and promote greater uptake of digital tax services,” the authority noted in a statement.
The ID-based authentication requires individual taxpayers to provide a valid Kenyan national ID and a mobile number registered with their iTax profile. The system will verify the identification credentials before authorization.
