Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote’s estimated net worth has surged to $51.3 billion, as investors place a higher valuation on his flagship oil refinery ahead of its listing on the Nigerian Exchange.

Dangote, Africa’s richest person, has seen his fortune rise sharply following the valuation of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, which is preparing for what is expected to be Africa’s largest-ever initial public offering (IPO).

The refinery is offering 4.1 billion shares at ₦525 each, seeking to raise about ₦2.15 trillion ($1.6 billion). The company is valued at approximately $47.6 billion based on the IPO pricing.

The refinery, located near Lagos, was built at a cost of about $20 billion and currently has the capacity to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Dangote plans to double that capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day over the next three years.

Refinery valuation drives wealth increase

The increase in Dangote’s estimated wealth is largely linked to the higher valuation placed on his stake in the refinery rather than a direct cash payment to the billionaire.

The company had already raised $2.5 billion through a private placement in July, giving investors a new benchmark for valuing the privately held refinery. The subsequent IPO has brought greater visibility to the value of Dangote’s remaining stake.

The distinction is important: an increase in net worth based on the value of an ownership stake does not mean Dangote personally received tens of billions of dollars in cash.

Strong refinery performance

The refinery’s financial performance has also improved significantly as it expands production and exports.

It recorded a $1.82 billion net profit in the first half of 2026, compared with a loss of about $476 million during the same period the previous year. Revenue exceeded $13 billion during the six-month period.

The facility has also become an important supplier of refined petroleum products to international markets. Reuters reported that Dangote’s refinery supplied about 80,000 barrels per day of jet fuel to Europe in the second quarter, benefiting from disruptions to global fuel supplies.

IPO attracts retail investors

The IPO has generated substantial interest among Nigerian retail investors, with the minimum investment set at just 10 shares. Several digital investment platforms experienced outages after investor traffic surged following the launch.

The offering is scheduled to run until October 13, with trading expected to begin in late November. Proceeds will help finance the refinery’s planned expansion and strengthen its ability to raise additional capital in the future.

For Dangote, the IPO represents a major transition for an asset that has moved from a privately financed industrial project to a publicly accessible investment. It also provides investors with an opportunity to participate directly in one of Africa’s largest energy projects.

Forbes’ billionaire estimates can fluctuate with changes in asset valuations, share prices and other holdings, so the $51.3 billion figure should be viewed as an estimate rather than cash wealth.
