Amsons Group, the pan-African conglomerate behind Bamburi Cement and East African Portland Cement, has committed KSh4.5 billion to construct and equip 10 specialised mother-and-child hospitals across Kenya.
The project, known as “Amsons Mama na Mtoto Kwanza,” is being implemented in partnership with the Government of Kenya and is designed to expand access to maternal and newborn healthcare, particularly in underserved areas.
Under the agreement, Amsons will finance the construction and equipment of the facilities through a Build, Equip and Transfer (BET) model before handing them over to the government. The government will subsequently be responsible for staffing, medical supplies and ongoing operations.
The facilities are expected to serve more than one million women, with the project being rolled out over three financial years from 2026/27 to 2028/29.
The hospitals will be located across nine counties, with Nairobi receiving two facilities and one facility each planned for Kwale, Mombasa, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot.
Each hospital is expected to provide critical maternal and newborn services, including antenatal care, maternity services, maternal intensive care, delivery and recovery facilities, as well as operating theatres. Bamburi Cement said the facilities will each include two operating theatres.
The initiative comes as Kenya continues to face significant challenges in maternal and neonatal healthcare, particularly in areas where specialist facilities, healthcare workers and medical equipment remain limited.
The Government later approved a related KSh4.5 billion Mother-and-Child Lifeline Initiative in June 2026, with facilities identified in locations including Magadi Road in Nairobi, Galmagalla in Garissa, Siakago in Embu, Kisumu, Kabichbich in West Pokot, Huruma in Uasin Gishu, Tudor in Mombasa, Bahati in Nakuru, Samburu in Kwale and Chebunyo in Bomet.
For Amsons, the investment represents a major expansion of its corporate social responsibility activities in Kenya. The group’s Kenyan interests include Bamburi Cement, which describes itself as a member of the Amsons Group.
