Boeing is betting heavily on Africa’s rapidly expanding aviation market, forecasting that the continent’s commercial aircraft fleet will more than double over the next two decades as passenger demand rises.
According to Boeing’s 2026 Commercial Market Outlook, Africa’s commercial fleet is expected to increase from about 755 aircraft today to 1,625 by 2045. Passenger traffic is projected to grow by nearly 6% annually, driven by Africa’s young population, increasing urbanisation, a growing middle class and improving infrastructure.
Boeing estimates African airlines will require nearly 1,200 new aircraft through 2045. About 870 of these are expected to be single-aisle aircraft, reflecting strong demand for domestic and regional routes. Demand for widebody aircraft is also expected to more than double as African airlines expand long-haul networks.
The opportunity extends beyond passenger travel. Boeing expects Africa’s cargo fleet to grow from approximately 60 to 150 freighters, supported by e-commerce, logistics and expanding exports.
Supply constraints remain a major challenge
The aviation boom comes at a difficult time for aircraft manufacturers. Boeing is still working through production and supply-chain challenges. The company delivered 51 aircraft in August 2026, down from 57 a year earlier, with lower 787 Dreamliner deliveries contributing to the decline.
The company also faces delays surrounding its 777X programme, creating pressure over how long it can continue producing its existing 777F freighter. Ethiopian Airlines is reportedly close to ordering up to 10 Boeing long-haul freighters, highlighting the strong demand for cargo aircraft in Africa even as manufacturers struggle with capacity constraints.
Africa is already becoming an important market for Boeing. In July, Uganda Airlines ordered four 737-8s and four 787-9 Dreamliners, its first Boeing aircraft purchase, as it seeks to expand regional and international connectivity.
The growth could also create opportunities beyond aircraft sales. Boeing estimates Africa will need about 75,000 new aviation professionals, including pilots, technicians and cabin crew, over the next two decades. The continent’s aviation services market is also projected to reach about $140 billion through 2045.
For Boeing, Africa represents a potentially huge long-term market. But turning that potential into actual deliveries will depend on whether manufacturers can overcome supply-chain bottlenecks, production constraints and workforce shortages while African airlines secure the financing needed to expand their fleets.
