The Central Bank of Kenya’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is meeting today, October 7, 2026, to review the country’s monetary policy and determine whether to maintain or change the Central Bank Rate (CBR).
The CBR currently stands at 8.75%, after the MPC maintained the rate at its August 11 meeting.
The decision will be closely watched by borrowers, banks, businesses and investors. Changes in the CBR can influence short-term market interest rates and, over time, affect the cost and availability of credit in the economy. According to CBK, a reduction in the CBR signals an easing of monetary policy and is intended to encourage lower market interest rates and increased demand for credit.
The meeting comes as Kenya continues to face inflationary pressure. CBK’s latest figures show September inflation at 6.8%, while the average commercial-bank lending rate stood at 14.34% in August 2026.
For households, a change in interest rates could affect the cost of loans and mortgages. Businesses will also be watching the decision because borrowing costs can influence investment, expansion and working capital.
Investors are equally interested in the outcome because changes in monetary policy can affect returns across different asset classes, including government securities, bank deposits and other investments.
The MPC’s decision will therefore provide an important signal about the direction of Kenya’s interest-rate environment in the coming months.
